Concepts, Ideas, and Inspirations

I am going to be a creating a narrative game.

It will be a simple game where the player finds notes around the world which tell the story of the character the player is controlling.

Concepts and Ideas:

Realistic and HD textures OR Lowpoly and 'cartoonish' textures

Story ideas:
  • Criminal on the run
  • Patient in a coma
  • WWII soldier revisiting war locations

The most likely one I will pursue is the WWII idea. I want to make this an optional educational tool. The target is from 10 years old to any age of people that play games. The younger target audience doesn't need to be gamers, just people in school or in education.

Inspirations:

Firewatch (Campo Santo, 2016)

The visual style and atmosphere this game creates is something I will never experience again and I want to draw on the techniques used to create this.

The story in Firewatch is very simple yet engaging and emotional. This is done through dialogue primarily as there are only two main characters in the game with a few side characters you never really see or hear from. The primary characters, one of which is controlled by you, is only able to talk to the other through a radio, no visual contact is ever made adding to intrigue and the 'page-turner' effect.

Slender: The Arrival

The gameplay is very simple: control a character and walk through the story.

This is how I want my game to be. Mine however will be a little more open, less linear, and less 'horror' more 'relaxing adventure'.

If I choose the WWII idea:

Battlefield 1

The environments of this game are beyond brilliant. French towns devastated by war that create a sense of great immersion. If I choose my WWII idea I will be using these maps (St Quentin Scar, Amiens...) as guides/inspirations.
